UI + interaction designer in training. web design & new media graduate student at AAU SF. music fiend and adrenaline junkie.
I guess the fact that I write this blog makes it obvious how much I love Photoshop. It’s my tool of choice for designing icons and complex UI.
The new Photoshop CC will bring one new amazing feature, editable rounded rectangles! But there are a few more features that would make Photoshop even better for UI and Graphic Designers:
Prototype Real / Digital Info Interface System
Using projection and gestures to create interactive relationship with information - video embedded below:
Fujitsu Laboratories has developed a next generation user interface which can accurately detect the users finger and what it is touching, creating an interactive touchscreen-like system, using objects in the real word.
“We think paper and many other objects could be manipulated by touching them, as with a touchscreen. This system doesn’t use any special hardware; it consists of just a device like an ordinary webcam, plus a commercial projector. Its capabilities are achieved by image processing technology.”
Using this technology, information can be imported from a document as data, by selecting the necessary parts with your finger.

met with ryan today (after a month of scheduling in advance). i thought i was ready for a presentation somewhat…but looks like i’m hitting the ground and sprinting faster.
nauseous, but i’m confident that i can impress the committee. back to after effects. EARLY PRESENTATIONS ARE JUST NOT FAIR. NOT. FAIR.
think about: legibility

an interesting take on the design of soundcloud’s waveforms using javascript. useful if I were to develop this UI in the browser.
jam with chrome - an HTML5 experiment
check this out for future inspiration and developing community aspect later in HTML5!
picked up these books today to hopefully help me further on the visual direction of my project.
The other day I struck up conversation with a DJ during my workout at the gym, and brought him on for an idea of his workflow. Here are his survey results.
ABOUT YOU
What current experience do you have with DJing? I have been Djing for 8 years. I DJ open format which means I never stick to one genre. I DJ mostly mobile.
How long have you been Djing? Up
SOFTWARE/TOOLSWhat Interfaces/Devices/Programs/Instruments do you use? Serato Scratch Live, Serato Itch, Virtual DJ
If you’re a digital DJ, what’s your main software preference? Serato
Why? It’s simple, stable, easy to navigate and has pretty good features. I don’t like overly complex DJ interfaces. I think solid mixing and great music selection are the most important aspects of Djing, nowadays, manufacturers are throwing so many knobs and buttons on software and hardware and people aren’t starting off learning the basics.
Describe the process you went through to learn these interfaces. Practice, fail and learn, watch youtube videos and ask friends, practice more.
What percent of the time do you use digital tools/analog tools? How comfortable are you with learning new interfaces? I use digital tools mostly because they are lighter weight and smaller footprint. I don’t have time to learn another interface. I still want to learn the Akai APC40.
How important is it for you to have real feedback versus visual feedback during a gig? ?
How important is tactile feedback? (touch interface vs. real knobs, etc.) Super important for the interface to have immediate response. I like real knobs, etc for that reason. I know there will be no delay.
YOUR PROCESS
What tools do you use to discover new music? I belong to a bunch of DJ record pools so I search those first. Spotify is another good place. DJ friends, and the radio.
How do you go about preparing for a DJ Gig? Do you pre-set your crates? I definitely prepare my crates by categorizing music into crate. For example I will put all of my clean rap edits into “Clean Rap Edits” crate and maybe sub crate that a bit too (trap, hyphy, etc.)
How often do you live mix? Every weekend :)
What percentage of your collection is digital? Almost all, I am not a big record collector.
Analog? Not much
Describe your setup process. When DJing, what controls do you find yourself tweaking most often? Volume and eq for sure!
PHYSICAL LIMITATIONS
How much space do you typically need for all of your gear? Not including speakers, etc. I can fit all of my gear on a 6ft table.
What tools do you wish you had access to for your live sets? Some kind of cool request system
It’s a brave new world in terms of new tools that are out there in terms of social media. What features would you think would add to/ help the DJ experience? Maybe a live stream of the DJ set where people can listen from home, etc.
SOFTWARE CRITIQUEWhat do you find challenging/annoying about current interfaces? Not much
What could be improved?
What do you appreciate about current interfaces? I like that they have been super solid for me.
What do they make effortless?

cinder: a c++ library for creative coding
possible library for future development - the cinder c++ library has been used to create plenty of immersive technology installations. I’m a little nervous when it comes to coding in general, but maybe I can handle it! the particular project shown in the video above takes input from kinect cameras and reacts to motion.

Scans from a 4x5 tilt-shift camera with multiple exposures and layered to bring out highs and lows for HDR effect.
First foray into after effects. The assignment? Mock up a magazine cover. For my version, I chose to mock up the design of GQ cover and use some footage from a music video by Childish Gambino. full iPad mockup- with rendered C4D iPad animation.
The wonderful Jessie Ware joined us onstage at Night+Day in Berlin. We did a version of Modjo ‘Lady’ + Stardust ‘Music Sounds Better With You’ over Jamie’s edit of Sunset. It was such a joy to share the stage with her, she has an incredible voice! Here is a video filmed from side of stage.
